At the heart of the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is a focus on higher expectations and higher cognitive demands for all students. School districts must provide rigorous and relevant instruction to ensure that all students are on a path toward college and career readiness.

How do school districts transition to the CCSS and Next Generation Assessments when students have gaps in knowledge and skills needed to succeed with the new performance measures?

Principles key to Response to Intervention (RtI) implementation identified by the National High School Center, the National Center on RTI, and the Center on Instruction, include “Research-driven instructional practices within the core, or Tier I, instruction to meet the majority of students’ educational needs.”
