Formative assessment practices support teachers’ instructional decision-making, enabling them to target instruction and meet student needs. There are questions in the field about what formative assessment is, what it looks like in practice, and how it might benefit English learners, specifically.
The Region 15 Comprehensive Center, in collaboration with the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) at the U.S. Department of Education (USED), invites you to a series of learning sessions designed to answer these questions.

Learning sessions will focus on what formative assessment is and how it can be implemented to support the academic and socioemotional growth of students classified as English learners with a particular focus on early learners in grades K-2. Participants will engage actively with the facilitators and each other around best practices for K-2 English learner instruction, ways formative assessment supports those practices, and how they as educational leaders can create the conditions for success for educators and students doing this work.
These sessions will focus on supporting state, district, site, and instructional leaders to:
- Gain a deeper understanding of formative assessment practices and their connections to effective instruction for English learners;
- Understand how formative assessment practices can support K-2 English learners to experience early school success and build a strong bridge to the intermediate grades and beyond; and
- Build their capacity to boost implementation of formative assessment practices in support of English learner students at the school, district, and state levels.
Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions.
