Making the most of summative assessments and the results they produce can be challenging. WestEd’s customized assessment literacy workshops, and accompanying tools and materials, help educators and administrators understand how summative assessments are designed, developed, and scored and how to best use the results.
Service Details
WestEd designs and develops customized face-to-face workshops for educators to learn components of assessment literacy and effective use of results from large-scale summative assessments.
These workshops provide opportunities for participants to learn about how statewide summative assessments align with the state content standards and yield valuable information about what students know and can do in relation to college and career readiness.
In these assessment literacy workshops, educators can learn about appropriate and valuable uses for the summative results that can help improve teaching and learning. Participants will become prepared to facilitate training educators in their education community.
Facilitators tailor these workshops to meet each state’s unique standards and system of assessments.
In addition to the workshops, teachers can benefit from our instructional video series on designing solid standards-based assessments for use in the classroom and from videos explicitly created for performance assessment training.
What Makes This Service Unique
WestEd’s Assessment Literacy Workshops are facilitated by experienced professional development providers with a deep knowledge of assessment design, use, state standards, and teaching and learning. Workshops are tailored to your unique needs.
The efforts of WestEd’s assessment literacy team are informed by research from the National Research Council (1999, 2001, 2003), Linda Darling-Hammond (2010, 2012, 2013), and the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (2009).
These resources provide the research-supported foundation for WestEd’s customized professional development services and training materials, which intend to enable a deeper understanding of the characteristics of high-quality assessments used for different purposes. In addition, our services and materials help foster local initiatives to design effective tests and performance measures.
Participants in our assessment literacy workshops report increased confidence in using data emerging from their assessment systems and in their educators’ ability to provide effective standards-based instruction.
