Strengthening Implementation of Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education in Mathematics

Description

Research has shown that mathematics education is far from being a race-neutral and culture-free domain. Black and Brown students frequently face barriers to high-quality mathematics instruction compared to their White counterparts.

Rather than dismiss or problematize students’ racial and cultural identities, culturally responsive and sustaining education (CRSE) intentionally leverages the knowledge and ways of being that students bring to the classroom. This brief explores how to strengthen CRSE in mathematics.
