NextGenScience

About Us

In April 2020, NextGenScience launched at WestEd to support educators with the implementation of rigorous science standards across the nation. We bring together expertise in classroom teaching, learning design, science leadership, and policy analysis.

Our team was formerly part of Achieve—the nonprofit organization that coordinated the development of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2013 and led efforts to improve the design, selection, and implementation of high-quality science curricula and assessments.

At WestEd, NextGenScience provides tools and services that support state, district, and regional leaders with the design and implementation of high-leverage strategies, empowering them to make big changes in science teaching, learning, and leadership. Vision

All students experience a science education that honors their identities and experiences, motivates them to explore relevant issues, and prepares them for college, career, and citizenship.

Services

Science Instructional Materials and Assessment Reviews. Through materials reviews, we aim to create a shared vision and common understanding about what materials designed for today’s science standards look like.

Science Leadership Development. We build the capacity of science leaders to develop sustainable strategies and networks focused on high-impact, research-based strategies.

State of Science: District Science Evaluation. We support states and districts to evaluate and improve their science systems through the equitable implementation of today’s rigorous science standards.

Science Curriculum Support and Professional Learning. Our professional learning opportunities support educators and leaders at all levels with evaluating, selecting, designing, and implementing high-quality instructional materials and assessments.

Steward of the NGSS. We’re passionate about great science teaching and committed to supporting educators with achieving the vision of the NGSS. NextGenScience serves as a steward of the NGSS and standards based on A Framework for K-12 Science Education.
