The California School Staff Survey (CSSS) provides a way to confidentially obtain staff perceptions about learning and teaching conditions.
The CSSS also can be used to regularly inform decisions about professional development, instruction, the implementation of learning supports, and school reform.
Based on research about the most pressing needs of schools today and on feedback from teachers and administrators, the CSSS includes a wide range of questions about key learning and teaching conditions, barriers, and supports for both general and special education.
Since 2004, all local education agencies in California have been required to administer the CSSS at least once every two years per No Child Left Behind requirements.
In addition, the CSSS is being used by schools throughout the nation, and is required by the federal government of participants in the national evaluation of the Safe Schools Healthy Students program.
Instruments
The California School Staff Survey (CSSS) consists of a general Core Module that targets all staff, and of two, topic-specific modules for staff with responsibilities related to learning supports and special education.
A custom module can also be created with questions that assess additional areas of concern for individual schools or districts. The California School Climate, Health, & Learning Surveys (CalSCHLS) website includes more information, as well as the downloadable survey.

Reports
The CSSS reporting system consists of an online report accessible by district staff, and a final, local report comprising a narrative discussion of the CSSS items and a set of tables arranged by topic. View or download these reports.
