Jill Neumayer DePiper is a Senior Research Associate with the Mathematics team. She is an expert in mathematics education and focuses on advancing knowledge of strategies to enhance the quality and equity of mathematics instruction. She leads initiatives that provide teachers with the tools and knowledge they need to improve student outcomes.
Drawing on her instructional design expertise, Neumayer DePiper specializes in developing and studying approaches that enable teachers to engage, support, and build upon the multicompetences that all students bring to the classroom. She currently leads formative evaluations of curricular materials and related professional development and draws on strategies from improvement science in her research and development work.
Neumayer DePiper has over 20 years of experience in mathematics education, including teaching across grade levels, designing curriculum, facilitating teacher learning, and conducting research with students and teachers. Before coming to WestEd, she was a research scientist at the Education Development Center and also the founding director of the Cape Cod Regional STEM Network. She has led the design and research of large-scale NSF- and IES-funded work related to mathematics curriculum and teacher professional development, particularly as related to facilitating the learning of students who are English learners.
Neumayer DePiper has disseminated widely through presentations and articles, including the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and ZDM–Mathematics Education, and she is also a coauthor of the book, Mathematical Thinking and Communication.
Neumayer DePiper has an MEd from George Mason University and a PhD from the University of Maryland in curriculum and instruction in mathematics.
